From Crashing Drones to Changing Industries, A Conversation with Drone Diva Desi

Apr 2, 2026 | Construction

Desi Eckstein, known across the industry as Drone Diva Desi, has been flying drones since 2012 back when most people had yet to see one. Like many early pilots, her journey started with crashes, trial and error, and constant learning. Those early experiences helped shape a career centered on training, safety, and using drones as real tools.

Today, Desi runs OnTheGoVideo.biz, where her primary focus is drone training, education programs, public speaking, and adventure based drone experiences. While she began on the service side, her passion has always been helping others gain confidence and develop professional skills.

Drones Are Tools, Not Toys

One of Desi’s core beliefs is that drones are tools that solve real problems. As the industry has matured, the conversation has shifted from what drones are to how they are used. Across construction, agriculture, and public safety, drones are saving time, improving safety, and reducing the need for boots on the ground.

The Biggest Mistake New Pilots Make

According to Desi, earning a Part 107 certificate is only the first step. Many new pilots underestimate the importance of professionalism, pre flight planning, and understanding the business side of drone work. In particular with construction, preparation and safety matter. Showing up ready and understanding site expectations is a key part of being taken seriously as a professional.

Finding Opportunity by Adding Value

Desi encourages pilots to think beyond standard deliverables. Instead of reinventing the wheel, she suggests identifying pain points within an industry and adding value there, whether that means safety documentation, compliance support, or specialized inspections.

Differentiation often comes from understanding the client’s world, not just flying better.

Training, Safety, and Community

Training is at the heart of Desi’s work. She focuses on helping pilots build muscle memory, confidence, and precision skills that go far beyond simply getting airborne.

She has also been deeply involved with Women in Drones, helping build community and mentorship opportunities. During the pandemic, she helped create Coffee Connection, a space where pilots could learn, share experiences, and grow together.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through programs like Girls Take Flight, Desi introduces young students to drones and STEM careers. For many, it is their first exposure to aviation and often a moment that opens new possibilities for the future.

Adventure Meets Aviation

Beyond training, Desi combines her love of flying with off-road adventure through drone treks that allow participants to explore remote landscapes while flying. She recently published Desert Escape Off Grid, Off Road, and in the Air, sharing lessons from these experiences.

Looking Ahead

Despite industry uncertainty, Desi remains optimistic. She believes the drone industry is still in its early stages and will continue evolving into an everyday tool across countless industries.

Her advice is simple.

Get out and fly. See the world from a higher perspective, and make great memories.
